Cyril Ransome was Professor of Modern History and English Language and History there from 1878 to 1896 when he resigned.

Arthur Ransome enrolled there in 1901 at 17½, to study science at his mother’s urging, but became interested in writing and books and dropped out after two terms in early 1902 to move to London and work for a publisher (Grant Richards).

The Brotherton Library at the University holds most of AR's papers.
