Hi Nankai -- we are excited to have Arthur Ransome Wiki as part of the Wikia community!

Starting a new wiki can be a big job, but don't worry, the Wikia Community Team is here to help! We have put together a few guides to getting started. They say imitation is the best form of flattery so absolutely check out other wikis on Wikia for ideas on layout, ways to organize your content, etc. We are all one big family at Wikia and the most important thing is to have fun!

  • Our guide to Getting Started gives you 5 things you can do right now to set your wiki up for success
  • We also put together some Advice On Starting a Wiki which provides a more a in-depth look at some of the important things you should consider when building a wiki
  • If you are new to wikis in general than we recommend checking our new user FAQ

If you need help (which trust me we ALL do) you can access our full in-depth help at Help Wikia, or email us through our contact form. Also, you can visit our live #wikia chat channel any time. A lot of the veteran "Wikians" hang out here so its a good place if come if you want to get some advice or simply make friends.

Now, go edit! We look forward to seeing this project thrive!

Best wishes, Catherine Munro

Hi Peter[]

I created Category:Major Characters by mistake. I meant to use the lower case for "characters" and go to your existing Category. Could you please delete it to avoid other people using it by mistake. Thanks AdamQ 20:41, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Its not Lights Out just yet[]

I am located 5 hours west of Greenwich, so its mid-evening here in Toronto and I don't spend much time watching TV. AdamQ 00:21, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

I will accept a mate's whistle! Sign me up as an admin.AdamQ 10:16, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Go to Special:Specialpages, you should see a list of "Restricted Special Pages" probably at the bottom. You can then pick one with a name such as "User rights management"

Click on that and then enter my User name AdamQ in the box.

After clicking on Edit user Groups, you should see a selection box with a column Member of: which will be empty and a second column of Available Groups with titles like "Bureaucrat" and "sysop". You should probably add me to both of those. Have a go! AdamQ 21:37, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

has been set up as a super category which includes. So we don't need both categories in an article because you can get from the sub-category to the super category and the article won't be in both categories. AdamQ 12:03, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

I did investigate this and it appears that Wikia has set a default skin (what you currently see as a service to the advertisers who want a distinctive (from Wikipedia) and consistent appearance for site visitors. So we can't change that for everyone.

Individuals who have a Wikia login name can change the appearance by changing the skin and you find that when you click on the MORE link at the top right beside the "Log Out" link and then select the bottom item "My preferences". Once there you can pick a skin from a wide selection by clicking on Skins, the second tag. One of the skins is called Monobook (under a heading Wikipedia skin) which gives you a Wikipedia look. I tried it for a while but decided to go back to the default because that is what visitors have to look at and I thought it best to ensure that I could see what they could see.

W3 could put a note on the Main page linking to all this so people can customise their skin if they want to log in. AdamQ 01:06, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

New Wikia software[]

Thanks for the info, I will try and get back on to the wiki this week, its been a busy time for me with kids going back to school etc. and work piling up for an October 1st deadline. AdamQ 22:03, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Did you like my Welcome template?[]

Just type in {{ARWelcome|Your user name}} to put it in. AdamQ 19:52, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

I was trying to weed out items that didn't have a particular AR connection, hence Preston was out because I couldn't think of an AR connection but Carlisle was in because I could. I may be wrong in somen cases. The other thing was to weed out article titles that are so large and general such as England or Australia which I would prefer to see as Ransome's England or Ransome's Australia but in their current incarnation would tend to just duplicate Wikipedia which I am also philosophically opposed to! It all started because England was top of the Wanted pages list and I thought that was a false priority. AdamQ 23:46, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

I like the idea of {{too native}} template but perhaps we should put similar instructions into the opening pages or perhaps the Welcome notice for new users so they don't get started and then deleted! AdamQ 00:20, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
For native locations why not just a direct Wikipedia link, eg: wikipedia:Trojan (automobile) or preferably Trojan Hugoboss 02:12, September 9, 2009 (UTC)

Hi I'm back[]

After a bit of a break I am going to start contributing again. One question, because I am rusty, if we have an article that speculates about something but it can't be proved (yet) from Ransome's writing or other people's research, what do we call it? Is it a "might have been" or something else. For example, if I had a theory that the original for the Wild Cat schooner was Ransome's boat the Slug (NOT a real idea!), but nowhere can I find anything to confirm it definitively despite all the circumstantial evidence I have mustered, how do I label the article? AdamQ 15:27, September 15, 2009 (UTC)

Shouldn't all pages have a category; when on some subject in the books this should be "Swallows and Amazons series" not "Books" ? Eg I would use this category for Treaty of Offence and Defence which has no category except "Ships baby". Hugoboss 01:57, October 21, 2009 (UTC)

Ad free[]

Hi! Would you like this wiki to be ad-free? I'm looking for wikis to be part of a new program which would remove all ads from the wiki for $19.95/month.

If you are interested, please be visit here to sign up. Let me know if you have any questions! - sannse (Help Forum) (blog) 21:17, May 27, 2010 (UTC)

Native category[]

H did you decide whether the Ransomes & Altounyans should be in the Native category, but they should be in some sort of category Hugoboss 13:47, June 16, 2010 (UTC)

Back again[]

Hi - glad you are back and someone else is editing Hugoboss 21:50, October 16, 2010 (UTC)

PS: Where has the useful Special Pages eg Wanted Pages feature disappeared to?? Hugoboss 13:22, November 3, 2010 (UTC)

Recent (2018) vandalism[]

Some vandalism removed from John Walker but see more under "Prototypes". And a lot on Swallows and Amazons Can it be traced? Hugoboss (talk) 22:50, July 22, 2018 (UTC)
