++Blqast your special bird!++

Welcome AdamQ. I like what you have been doing. I hoipe you do not mind (if you do you can change it back!) but I changed the definition of "coots" because I meant it to be distinct from "members of the Coot Club" – the Ds are the latter but not coots, while the coot with the white feather and George Owdon (horrid name) are coots but not etc etc.

Keep up the good work!

Don't worry amout the Major C thing, I put a redirect there toi Major c. Which by the way is #REDIRECT[[Page you want to redirect to]].

You are standing into danger[]

Loom at the time! You should be in bed! (assuming you are inBror near the Greenwich meridian). My excuse is (for slothful computing at noon) is that I am on nightshift (so I should be in bed) tonight and it is tanking down outside (here in New Zealand) ... now there is a red link. See if you can make THAT turn blue! There are two refs to NZ in the Swallows and Amazons series but one incorrectly refers to Australia. (turning THAT one blue is too easy!)

Yep - looks good. You know those maps that a Tars member drew some time ago? There's one of the lake, one of the island and one of Secret Water (I have them on my lounge wall, indeed!) - can you remember who it was and whether they might allow them to be included on here. It occurred to me, when reading the description of the lake, that a map might be useful. I do have digital versions of them (probably too big) - but I'm not sure what the copyright situation is.

can you admin?[]

Adam, would you (a) become an administrator and (b) make it look like Wikipedia (because I think it will work more universally and be more accessable to joe public)

Peter Nankai 03:46, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

I prefer co-captain. Trouble is I don't know how to, can you talk me through it?

Nankai 21:23, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Congratuklations Adam, you are now a sysop, a rollback and a bureaucrat. Sounds like a string of insults to me. Now, if you can capture my ship Polly, then your ship will be flagship and you will be commodore. Polly is outside on the grass, so it should not be too tricky.

Good luck!

PeterNankai 21:57, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Good id3ea about categories, Adam. How do you fgeel about simplifying the design of the wiki, to make it more like wikipedia? I think it's something called "skins" but I have no idea how it works. I think it would be good because I believe most trafficf woukd come from wikipedia users and people for whom substance is more important than style. My motive is personal: my old computer running Netscape 7 can't display the wiki proprely so my wig is seldom wizzy. I hope you can help. Keep up all the good work.

Peter Nankai 00:21, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Velly pleased[]

I thought your revisions to "what ARW is" were spot on. I have hugely simplified the front page, because I'm fed up with it not displaying properly on my 1998 vintage iMac running Netscape 7. (I'm using the Wikipedia style skin). Columns Schmolumns. I hope it isn't too tombstony on modern browsers. If you can twiddle a happy medium feel free.

Seems a good idea to keep rotating Featured Articles, especially if they have good photos (Windermere's is breathtakingly good). I'm thinking of Goblin next, using a nice photo from wikipedia:Nancy Blackett. Article might need a bit of padding though. Kutgw, Peter alias Nankai 00:05, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Perfectly decent photo of her at Goblin already I see, of which no criticism intended by the foregoing; didn't know it was there.Nankai 00:11, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

There's a message from Wikia[]

Adam, have a look at user talk:Nankai -Peter Nankai 21:29, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Back to school eh? That must mean the summer hols are ending. I find it hard to get used to that hemisphere thing. My old man's over there by the way, staying with friends at a place called Port Credit near Toronto. -Peter

Nice marine shop at Port Credit called The Store that I occasionally visit even though its a bit far from where we live unless I make a special trip for some reason.
Summer Holidays in North America end on the first Tuesday of September. Unlike the S, A & Ds they don't get a proper Winter Holiday at Christmas and the mumps vaccine has really put a stopper on all that quarantine time. AdamQ 23:29, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

{{ARWelcom etc[]

Yes I do like it, Sorry that you welcomed me in disguise, I just wanted Bill Wright's contrib to be accurately attributable. Do you like the login name I coined? Bill's stuff is great. I think the AR Welcome semaphores would be nice at the top of the main page. Nankai 19:29, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

removing general knowledge red links[]

I agree with what you are doing. Why don't you change the red link to a link to the relevant Wikipedia article in appropriate cases? kutgw, PeterNankai 23:30, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

On the other [[hand]]...[]

On the other hand, the reason some of those redlinks were there might have been to eventually encourage new articles on England, Scotland, Preston, Euston, Hong Kong, China... all locations mentioned in Arthur Ransome books; the BBC could warrant an article detailing its long association with AR's works...Nankai 23:39, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Hmmm, yes...[]

Yes, I see what you are getting at. I am keen for this thing to complement WP, so generally banish GK stuff. I'd write an article on Morse code for example, but it would be about scenes from WH, ML etc, not banging on about Samuel Morse. But I also wouldn't call it Ransome's Morse, because, wouldn't all articles be Ransome's something?Nankai 23:53, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Perhaps we need a · · —

This article or section contains native facts. Content not directly related to Arthur Ransome and his works may be deleted. Arthur Ransome Wiki recommends Wikipedia for matters of general (native) interest tag to avoid the thing you are concerned about. I'm sure we have one or two articles that are GK but nowhere near half as good as WP.

Nankai 00:01, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Toonative, England etc[]

I agree entirely. How about you add stuff from toonative where you think appropriate? The idea is to not look too much like boot camp, shouting at everyone. No ALL CAPS or bold or exclamation marks!!! Have a look at England, I hope you'll agree that it's a Start (PD, final chapter) And can you do that thing to the morse on toonative?Nankai 00:28, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Grab a chance and you won't be sorry for a might have been[]

Hello Adam and welcome back. I have been on an AR Wiki bender for about three weeks after a long absence.

I think it is important to get stuff down but to mark it so that it can be checked later. Here's how I'd use the tags {{mhb}} and {{evidence?}}

mhb tag[]

If something might be the case but you have no more than a gut feeling, then you are in the realm of conjecture:

Great Aunt Maria was living at Beckfoot during the first few chapters of SAmight have been

Herbert-Smith who sailed out to sea with AR in Nancy Blackett (CFT12) was the same Mr Herbert-Smith who caught a pike weighing 25 pounds in 1955 (CFT9)might have been.

Both statements are speculative, yet provable (AR might have explicitly mentioned the GA in his draft of SA; information about Herbert-Smith could turn up). By having statements like these "out there" at least they are open for discussion , followed by debunking or conformation (Dick would say "exploding").

evidence? tag[]

If you know you have read something somewhere but you can't remember where:

In Swallows and Amazons, Roger is aged 7ref req.

Captain Flint has been to Malaya ref req
