The Swallows take their name from their borrowed dinghy the Swallow. They are all members of the Walker family staying at as paying guests with the Jacksons of Holly Howe.
The Swallows consist of:
- John Walker Master
- Susan Walker Mate
- Titty Walker Able seaman
- Roger Walker Ship's Boy (later promoted to Able seaman)
Other occasional members of the crew are:
- Bridget Walker Ship's Baby
- Gibber Ship's monkey
- Polly Ship's parrot
