Arthur Ransome Wiki

Swallow II was a 10 foot clinker dinghy with a brown sail which Arthur Ransome used as a tender towed behind Selina King, and later Peter Duck (to avoid having to haul a dinghy on deck). She was built by Harry King at Pin Mill. Arthur Ransome collected her on 15 October 1938 and called her Swallow.

In 1989 Roger Wardale heard of her via Brigit Altounyan. The owner Nick Imber turned her over to Roger, who arranged for five 11-year-old boys in his class to help restore her. She had been painted white when the varnish became unattractive, but still had Ransome’s oars with the letters A. R. inscribed with copper tacks (NBUS pages 132, 251).
