Lanehead, the home of W.G. Collingwood and family, is now an Outdoor Education Centre. It is one of many houses around Coniston Water and Windermere that have been suggested as possible models for Beckfoot.

The first Swallow, in which Arthur Ransome learnt to sail, was kept in the Lanehead boathouse. He sometimes stayed at Lanehead, and was given a room of his own to work in (CFT1).
