Japan is an archipelago including four main islands and a great many smaller ones, located in the northern Pacific Ocean near China. The country is similar in size to Britain or New Zealand.
In Arthur Ransome's books[]
- Captain Flint had apparently visited Japan: his trunk had a sticker of the Nippon Yusen Kaisha shipping line on it, the stickers delighted the able-seaman (SA28).
- In Missee Lee, the Wild Cat and her crew are farewelled by Japanese sailors slung on planks from a Japanese merchant steamship as they leave the hundredth port; they stop their rust-chipping and shout Banzai (ML1).
Native affairs[]
- When he moved to London Arthur Ransome met the Japanese writer Yone Noguchi, and through him the popular illustrator Yoshio Markino; they are mentioned in Bohemia in London (TLE p36).
- The world's first club dedicated to Arthur Ransome and his books, the Arthur Ransome Club was founded in Japan in 1987
