Irling Tambs was a Norwegian writer and adventurer. His book The cruise of the Teddy was edited and introduced by Arthur Ransome and his pilot ship Teddy may have provided an inspiration for the fictional pilot ship Sea Bear in Great Northern?.

Tambs sailed his ship Teddy to New Zealand, won the first Tasman Cup yacht race, experienced the Napier Earthquake and later wrecked his ship on the New Zealand coast.
