Hugh Brogan wrote the first biography of Arthur Ransome, The Life of Arthur Ransome which was published by Jonathan Cape in 1984. He later edited a book of Arthur Ransome's correspondence, Signalling from Mars.

He also edited two books by Arthur Ransome:

Hugh Brogan was for ten years a Fellow of St John’s College, Cambridge. In 1984 he was a lecturer in American History at the University of Essex, and had just completed A History of the United States.
