Headingley is a suburb of Leeds where the Ransome family lived in the 1890s. His father Cyril Ransome, was Professor of History at the Yorkshire College (later to be Leeds University).

Arthur was born in their first house at 6 Ash Grove in the Hyde Park area, which he recalled as a mean, ugly little building. The house now has a blue plaque over the door commemorating the event. By 1890 they moved to a smart neighbourhood, Balmoral Terrace, Headingley; a move made possible by the success of his father’s books (TLEp12).
