- 1949 31 January: Arthur Ransome stops work on Coots in the North. He comes across a volume of West African folk tales in a French edition, and sets out to translate them as The Country of Wild Beasts. But there were difficulties with the author (or her agent), and the manuscript has disappeared (Life, page 411, 415).
